Zhiheng Zhang behind a cinema camera

Zhiheng Zhang is a street photographer based in London. His work moves through what the writer Georges Perec called the “infra-ordinary”: the vast, unremarked texture of daily life that unfolds just beneath the threshold of what we think is worth noticing. A commute. A lunch break on a bench. The pause between one obligation and the next. He is not looking for drama, but for the small, fugitive moments of delight that hide inside routine.

Before he raises the camera, he meditates. It is a brief, deliberate ritual that empties the mind and sharpens attention, so that by the time he steps onto the street, he is already listening rather than merely looking.

Trained in Film at the London Film Academy, he carries a filmmaker’s instinct for framing, timing and gesture into his still photography, working primarily in black and white to let form and light, rather than event, carry the image.
